City of Atlantic Beach staff will host two traffic-safety public input meetings for residents of Main Street and vicinity on Thursday, Aug. 25, at City Hall.
The City hired a traffic consultant to review Main Street for traffic calming and had several public meetings last winter and spring. The consulting firm presented two options to help make Main Street a safer place for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Both of these options would eliminate on-street parking (on-street parking is often used as traffic-calming). After receiving feedback from the community and a comprehensive discussion, the Commission asked for an option that retains the on-street parking.
To help facilitate further review and discussion, three options are being reviewed.
Option 1: Highlights include reducing speed limit to 20 mph and adding a marked (painted and signage) 8-foot-wide pedestrian lane on one side of Main Street. (This option removes on-street parking.)
Option 2: Highlights include reducing speed limit to 20 mph and adding a marked (painted and signage) 5-foot-widde advisory shoulder for bicyclists and pedestrians on both sides of Main Street. (This option removes on-street parking.)
Option 3: Highlights include reducing speed limit to 20 mph; keeping on-street parking; adding traffic circles at West 14th and West Sixth streets; enhancing the bump outs at the bike path; and painting sharrows (shared-lane marking). (This option keeps on-street parking.)
Residents ar encouraged to attend community meetings at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Commission Chamber to provide input. Both meetings will cover the same materials/topics to help generate increased overall attendance and public input.
