The City of Atlantic Beach is honoring Joyce Schellhorn, recipient of the 2021 National Defense Distinguished Citizen Medal, presented recently by the Jean Ribault Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Schellhorn, director of the United Service Organization at Naval Station Mayport, was honored because of her lifetime support to the military and military families.
This prestigious award is presented to an individual who demonstrates honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism. Through decades of service as an educator, military spouse, and volunteer/employee of the USO, Schellhorn is "a fitting honoree in that you have contributed to the defense, security, and freedom of the community, state and nation in a truly exceptional manner, Mayor Ellen Glasser said in a letter to Schellhorn.
Schellhorn will receive special recognition at the Atlantic Beach City Commission's May 10 meeting.
